Most Scenic Road Trips in California

Most Scenic Road Trips in California

California busts with nature and picturesque landscapes that visitors will relish during road trip adventures. The state has diverse views, from beaches to deserts and snow-capped mountains.

  • 1. Death Valley Scenic Byway

Driving through the Death Valley is a personal favorite for travelers. The desert landscapes and extreme temperatures explain the area's name. This drive takes around three and a half hours on California Highway 190. One of the highlights of driving on this route is Furnace Creek, where natural springs give life to an oasis. You can stop for the night and camp at the Furnace Creek Campground and take the hiking trails in the nearby in the park. The salinas formed by evaporated water basins and the changing dunes in the desert are also an ideal backdrop for desert-themed photographs.

  • 2. Feather River Scenic Byway

Take the Feather River Scenic Byway that covers 130 miles. It will take you approximately three hours to complete the drive, without breaks. Drive through the Feather Canyon as you take in the rushing white waters and ridges. The cascading waterfalls and flowers highlight the canyons' natural beauty. There are also marvelous engineering works, including the Pulga and Tobin bridges-highway and railway bridges that cross each other. Climb over the Sierra Nevada pass and travel over granite cliffs. There are a thousand foot-drops at different points of the canyon. You can pull over to take in the majestic views. If you prefer to hike in between your drive, the Loafer Creek and Roy Rogers Trails are excellent options.

  • 3. Lake Tahoe to Lone Pine or Yosemite National Park

Highway 395 is an endless live film filled with diverse landscapes, from volcanic rocks and waterfalls to limestone towers. Start at South Lake Tahoe and drive to Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve and catch a glimpse of the tufa towers. Hundreds of birds fly over the water and create quite the spectacle. Drive on to Mammoth Lakes for a picturesque view of still lakes and mountains in the background. Continue to Lone Pine and indulge in the western-culture. Alternatively, you can drive to Yosemite National Park on Highway 120 for beauties like the Tuolumne Meadows. Stop by Wapama Falls for a hike through the trails and a shower as you cross the bridge near the falls.
