What to See in Dartmouth

Explore the natural beauty of the Dartmouth area by visiting Shubie Park. This sprawling urban park features a section of the old Shubenacadie Canal, originally built in 1853 to allow barges to pass through Halifax harbor and onto the Bay of Fundy.

The canal led to Dartmouth’s Waterfront which has been beautifully converted into a modern boardwalk. It has been the epicentre of the city for 250 years and today is lined with bars, restaurants and shops and provides a great view of neighbouring Halifax.

You can learn more about Dartmouth’s history by visiting the Quaker House, one of the oldest buildings in Nova Scotia. It once belonged to the Nantucket Quaker Whalers and you can take guided tours of the city from here in the summer.

Get Outdoors with Nature Trails Near Dartmouth

A lot of people choose home rentals in Dartmouth for the area's superb nature trails. The city is surrounded by magnificent countryside and is perfect for hiking. Shubie Park has over 9 kilometres of trails which follow the Shubenacadie Canal, however south of Lake Micmac is the stunning Oat Hill Lake Park. This quiet route is popular with dog walkers and is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

For yet more stunning nature, take a drive to Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area, 30 kilometres west of Dartmouth. This dramatic setting covers over 1,700 hectares and is an excellent place to canoe, raft, hike, mountain bike and alpine ski.

However, if your tastes are a little more cosmopolitan, you can hop across the harbour to Halifax. Here you’ll find a wide choice of museums, art galleries, an incredible seafront boardwalk and some of the best craft breweries in Nova Scotia.
