Icelandic culture

No trip to the island is complete without a visit to the National Museum of Iceland. Plan at least two hours to walk through multiple floors of artifacts and historic displays. Stick around afterward for a snack in the café, or a stroll on the observation deck.

One of Iceland's most photographed buildings, Hallgrímskirkja may be the most architecturally interesting church you ever visit. Take a trip to the top of the tower for some of the best views over Reykjavik, and an excellent photo op. Free organ recitals are held on the weekend.

Day trips

Take a break from the city and stretch your legs on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This scenic walking area around the large statue of Barður Snæfellsásoffers includes a lovely coastal trail and excellent bird watching. The harbor and town below make a great stop for lunch and shopping.

Explore bubbling mud, geysers, and more at the Krýsuvík Geothermal Area. The colorful pools and rock formations make excellent photo opportunities, and multilingual placards give plenty of information about the park. Be sure to wear shoes for hiking.
