It replaced an earlier tower built on this same hilltop by the Appalachian Mountain Club, an American Mountaineering Club founded in 1876. Park your car at Sheepfold to begin the hike, and stop at Bear Hill Tower for a picnic.

For another great excursion, check out Whip Hill Park, run by the Stoneham Conservation Commission. Established in the 1930s by James and Angie Crockett, the exotic mansion built in this park served as the Crockett family home till 1968. Mrs. Crockett entrusted the vast estate to the Town of Stoneham in memory of her husband. If you're in the mood for a hike after your visit, follow the winding woodland trails leading from the park to Middlesex Fells.
